| History |
In 2400 B.C Antigua and Barbuda were first populated by the Siboney. When Christopher Columbus discovered the islands in 1493, Arawak and Carib Indians inhabited them. The English who formed a colony in 1667 replaced the Spanish and French. Slavery was abolished in 1834, and the islands became an independent state part of the British Commonwealth in 1981. In 1995, refugees fleeing a volcanic eruption on the neighbouring island of Montserrat (3,000 people approx.) have settled in Antigua and Barbuda |
